In 1936, my grandmother Neva Jean Boerma and her family boarded a cruise ship for an around-the-world tour. She visited countries and cities from the Mediterranean, through the Indian Ocean, then through the South Pacific, Hawaii and ending in California. Her ship, the Empress of Britain made a number of these cruises while serving the Canadian Pacific line.
While visiting my family for Christmas in 2020, organized and scanned in all pages from her journal I could find. I did my best to accurately transcribe her words into text so that you may more easily share in her adventure. Please note; I made grammatical corrections where acceptable to aid in readability, and this is the cursive handwriting of a child, so some words were illegible.
Neva was 10 years old, and celebrated her 11th birthday aboard the ship.
After we got back from breakfast daddy received a telegram that if we went on the President Roosevelt we would be late for the Strathnaver the next ship we were to sail on and thus spoil our whole voyage
As the Majestic was sailing that same afternoon daddy made arrangement to take that as this is one of the largest and fastest ships across the Atlantic it would take five days to get to France and had plenty of time to get on our next steamer. We left at 4:30 PM. The same (check) afternoon I took some pictures on the ships, and at 7PM we had dinner. Sat in the lounge after dinner.
We have had no sunshine so far since we left New York. It has been a dark dreary weather also rainy. This morning we took our morning exercise by walking around the promenade deck. We were able to walk 13 times around to make a mile and are we tired by that time.
There also are several children on the ship. I played with one of the little girls her name is Elizabeth. She is six years old and she has a brother who is four. They had lived in Mexico and their daddy had died there. There were going to live in England. After lunch mother I played checkers we played 2 games and I won both of them. It is 4PM time for tea. We had our tea. Then I started to crochet but not for long. We played Tag next, and soon got read for supper
[ Something is written at the bottom… Dexnisome Reinforcements?]
In the morning at breakfast the sun came out. we went out on the deck and walked around. At 11AM we go to church on the ship they have "Church of England" it is very different from our service. They just read and pray and sing but have no sermon. Soon after we have lunch.
I played some more with the children on the deck. We played several games. After supper we walked on deck and then went to bed.
After Breakfast I went out and took some pictures as we had breakfast late it was soon time for lunch at 4 O’Clock. They had a children party in the dining room there were toys, balloons, and horns [check] and many good things to eat we had a very nice time. After supper Grisha Goluboff the young Violinist from Chicago, and his manager were with us on the ship. Age 13 he gave a recital this evening. Mother let me stay up to hear him play it was very nice.

… formerly the church of the King. The casket was made of Marble. Which was in the center of the church all the flags of his battles were still there and in on corner was buried the heart of his wife. Then going by the President of France his home, we went to lunch.
Starting out in the afternoon with some other people. Passing by two large motor car companies the Citroen and Renault. We went along the river where all the fish were G/Lnseine(check). After going thru a few villages we soon could see the town of Versailles. Driving on the blvd of Paris we saw the palace that was built by King Louis the XIV in the 16th Century. We only had time to see a few of the 263 rooms. We Saw most of the kings apartments and then the great ballroom. There were very pretty paintings and tapestries painted and woven by Libran (check) and Van Der Mulen. The ballroom was 42 feet wide and 700 feet long without supporting pillars it took this artist 18 years to paint this ceiling.

Having mirrors on one side to reflect the gardens on the other side. At this palace peace treaties of several wars were signed also of the world war. In the Center of this ballroom we stood on the spot where they were signed. On The end of this hall were the Queens apartment she had lots of pretty paintings and tapestries also. Then left the building to take a ride around the gardens which consisted of 300 acres. On our way back we stopped at a café for tea.
Thursday Morning we went to see the Louvre. It was a museum of pictures and sculptures painted and designed by famous people some of the artists were VanDerMullen, Debruin, Rembrandt and VanDyk. We also saw the painting of Whistler's Mother drawn by Whistler. Many of these paintings were hundreds of years old and have been shown in many centuries all over the world. Many were very old and the scultures dated back to the 20th Century. Out in front of the Louvre is the statue of Lafayette which was given to France by the school children of the United States.
In the afternoon we went in a department store in Paris they are large and pretty. There lifts are made of glass one is able to see most everything going up and down to the different floors in these lifts.
This morning we had to get ready to on the train. We got in a taxi to take us to the Lyon station. We were able to carry all our trunks in the taxi. They took out part of the front seat. On the way to the station one of the trunks started to fall out and and the steampships' agent had to hold it in. We were on the train 9 hours and 18 minutes when we arrived as Marseille we were very tired we went straight to the ship U.S.S. Strathnaver. We had our supper and went our exploring it soon it was time for bed.
The next morning a beautiful sunshine day. I went out on deck and played some games on deck. After lunch I walked around the deck and played witha girl I met her name was Mourine. So it was soon time to get ready for supper.
The U.S.S. Strathnaver weighs 22,500 tons. Carries first and tourist class passengers. England, India and Australia mail service. On this ship all the stewards are Indian, although not the bedroom stewards and stewardesses. Here we had a very nice time because there is a lovely swimming pool it is quite large of most of the time very rough.
Friday Morning we had to hurry as we are supposed to be in Port Sudan at 10AM. This is the only stop we make in the Red Seas as we have traveled about 700 miles from the Suez Canal. Here we got off the ship. We walked to a place where they had some large rowboats with little glass boxes on each side pulled by a motorboat from about two miles. From here we can look down through the glass boxes and see the different kinds of fish and the corals in the Red Sea. We got a taxi from shore to take us to the native part part of the town there the native children were playing in the mud near their huts. Most of the people have real bushy hair and they curl it with mud. We call them fuzzey wuzzeys. As it is nearly time to sail we went back to the ship but daddy stayed ashore and got some stamps for my stamps book.
We went through the straits of Aden this morning we soon came to the city of Aden Arabia. There were many war ships in the harbor a lot of queer looking ships. In the penninsula of aden the earth is volcanic rock that rises up from the sea it's said that in the rocks of that peninsula lives the body of Cain, the slayer of Abel and also the Queen of Sheba used to come here for play and pleasure in olden days. There are some large tanks - twenty nine in all, of of them holds twenty million gallons of water when filled. It would take from one to ten years of if filled by rain. This morning it rained a little they have had no rain since 1931 as all of the tanks were dry. For all transportation they use camels.
Today the chief steward of the dining room gave a party for the children on the ship. There were twelve children seated around a table. We had very nice things to eat and lots of toys to play with, while eating a man came in wearing a a mask and handed out presents. I received a nice doll after that they had moving pictures, they showed Krazy Kat, the Little Red Hen, Mickey Mouse, and Jack and the Beanstalk. The party lasted until six o'clock - after dinner tonight the grown ups have a costume party.
Daddy is up on the sports deck playing quiots and I went up to watch him. Then I watched a lady making a toy dog out of fuzzy material. After lunch I went in swimming for an hour then I got my camera and took some pictures of daddy + mummy, Captain and other people. Then I saw a notice on the board that all people getting off at Bombay could see the bridge and see how this ship was run by electricity. While we were there no one was steering the ship, only an officer watching the compass. there was a little place where we stood over the sides of the ship.
We are anxiously waiting to reach Bombay they tell us we will be there by 1PM. At last we see land we see it quite away off before we reach Bombay India. We see several little sail boats and pass the Empress of Britain. The ship we are to sail on next. It looks exaclty like the Strathnaver only twice as large we are very anxious to get on the Empress of Britain and see what she is like. We expect to stay at the Hotel at Bombay for the ship is anchored out too far it will take too much tume going up and back. The First night we took a walk to a bathing beach and got a tax to take us around the city but it soon was dark and we not see as much, only it had beautiful buildings. There are many natives here some have no houses so at night they sleep on the sidewalk, in empty lots and in front of hotels. Their clothes are dirty and we try not to get near them.
Today we went shopping at the different bazaars we visited the ruins of wales museum. Saw pretty pottery glassware painting and stuffed animals - some very large like lions, tigers, monkeys wolves snakes and fish. then went back to the hotel and sat in the outer court with palms and cocunut trees and states of all kinds of many different flowers which are very beautiful in this climate. We have to wear thick hats called Topees for the sun gets very hot, one may get sunstroke if we do not wear them.
This morning Daddy said we would have an interesting day. Today we will take an auto ride around Bombay first we will go to a Tailorwho is making me a Indian Princess costume. we are now starting our trip we see the soldiers camp, the city hall, and come to what they call the burning ghats. The Hindus burn the bodies of the people who die. They build a high pile of wood they put the body on, and them some more wood. Only the men go to a funeral and they stay until the body is all burned and pick up the ashes and throw them into the sea. From here we go th Malabar hill to look over the whole city. Then to the previous burning place. They put thier dead on a high building and let the vultures eat the bodies they are all eaten but the bones in fifteen minutes there are many vultures waiting for these bodies they have about 3 bodies a day, the bones are put in a dry well and dry up. The rain washes them into poweder and into the sea. We next go by a lot of beautiful homes and then the native bazaars where everything is sold in the street. We don't hardly get through with the car, most of these people carry their wares in baskets on their head.
[Continued]
On our way back to hotel we saw a wedding being performed. A lot of native in royal dress are ready to go to this wedding.
After breakfast daddy went down the street to look and see if he could find an American Church, soon a found a small presbyterian church with an American Minister from California. After service went back to hotel to have lunch, after lunch took a long nap. When I woke up it was six P.M. Time for church. At the service were several native but mostly foreigners who live in Bombay.
Monday, and we first go and see the tailor who is making me a suit of white Indian silk and my costume. Later will take lunch ride of about six miles to Elephant island. Here are many caves, these caves are cut out of solid rock. This was a Hindu temple thousands of years ago but before we get there we get a ride up a hill on a chair carried on the shoulders by four natives. This was a rough ride, but I enjoyed it. On our way back to Bombay the sea was rough and the launch rocked a great deal, heard the phone. We were over a rope which caught in our propeller and one of the natives went down in the water to untangle it.
Today we take a ride in a horse carriage to see the lagoons, Daddy bought me some pretty brass ware in one of the oriental stores. In afternoon, I received my Indian costume it was so pretty has lots of gold brain on it. Daddy will buy some shoes for it tomorrow. This city seems so strange everybody carries things on their heads on trays.
India has a large gateway where many people to through when they get off the ship. The first thing we noticed was the snake charmers that play an instrumetn which makes the snake angry. The snake crawls out of the basket and has a fight with the mongoose. Daddy and I go down to get a special calendar for Muwestra (sp) also have to get a blouse for my suit. Then go back to hotel to get all our things packed as we expect to leave Bombay at 8PM tonight.
In India one could shop for days (full up the ship in fact) so many things to bring which we long to buy. In the shops of Bombay. wondrous and unusual articles are for sale, and not only in the shops. Vendors of novelties are everywhere, from bread and portage to a fighting mongoose and basketful of snakes. They offer every manner of things. Tailors come out to ship and take orders for linen suits and monk jackets. They are very good at making these also very cheap. Many men wear trousers tight to the knee and baggy above. And also their shirt tails out. The native dress of the women in India is the Sari it is made of all bright colors.
Last night we boarded the Empress of Britain there were doctors to make an inspection of the people to make sure there was no disease that they got while they stay in India. This ship is very large, looks like a city 44,000 tons and 750 feet, nine stories high with five lifts, two large shops and many beautiful rooms. We have a nice cabin it's 30 feet long and is 10 feet wide. With a blue rug on the floor and some nice soft chairs, it also has a large port hole.
Daddy got us some deck chairs from the deck steward as it is a very warm day so we are able to sit out on the deck.
Today we see the shores of India there are large mountains some of them are shaped like the pyramids in Egypt. Soon now we will leave India and sail on to Colombo Ceylon.

Grand Canyon
We arrive on the train at Grand Canyon 8AM have breakfast at a hotel near by after breakfast we got a bus to take us for a ride around a part of the rim of it in the morning they took us to several places where we could see a good view of it and last took us to a place where they showed pictures of some men when they were down in the canyon. From there we walked back to the Hotel for lunch.
After lunch they would take us to see some more things, first we went to a place where a man gave a lecture of how large the canyon was, he said it was ten miles wide and if you wanted to go around it you would have to go 2,000 miles which is quite a long way. He also said that animals on the other side of the canyon were deifferent from here, he said that the squirrels over there had white tails, the only place in the world and in the canyon the animals were like ?????. He took us to other places also, and then went back to hotel for supper and soon we were back to the train.
Expect to arrive in Detroit 6:25PM
